The name of this puzzle clues that old phones and their features are relevant. In particular, after solving some of the clues, we might observe from some easier clues (such as 1-Down) that each clues two words that have the same T9 encoding. This is further clued by the ovals which make up the grid which are reminiscent of old phone buttons. From there, it is just a task of finding 2 words to fit each clue, and completing the grids (below reproduced as a square grid).
